Our Story: Empowering Ethiopian Young Women

At the Ethiopian Girls’ Bright Future Fund (EthioGBFF), we believe education is the key to unlocking the limitless potential of every Ethiopian young woman. Our mission is to empower girls from impoverished family backgrounds in Ethiopia’s most underserved regions by providing them with the opportunities they need to excel academically, break the cycle of poverty, and become agents of change in their communities.

The Journey Begins: A Vision of Change

EthioGBFF was born out of the vision of Amare Berhie and his wife, Weyni Tekleab, both Ethiopian Americans who recognized the dire need for educational support in Ethiopia. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges Ethiopian young women from impoverished family backgrounds in the Wag Himra Zone face due to financial hardship, societal expectations, and limited resources, they decided to take action.

With a deep commitment to providing education as a pathway out of poverty, they partnered with Dr. Melsew Tefera, an educator passionate about equity, to launch a scholarship program that would change lives.

Meet Hiwot: A Vision for the Future

Hiwot, a 19-year-old Ethiopian woman from the remote village of Wag Himra, has always dreamed of becoming an economist. Growing up in an impoverished family, Hiwot faced numerous financial and societal barriers. Thanks to EthioGBFF’s scholarship, she is now thriving in her university studies and working towards a brighter future. Her journey reflects the power of education to break barriers and build a better life.

With EthioGBFF’s scholarship program, she is overcoming challenges that once seemed impossible. The scholarship has provided her with the resources to focus on her studies and allowed her to chase her dream of becoming a doctor.
