Our Story: A Journey of Empowerment

About EthioGBFF

The Ethiopian Girls’ Bright Future Fund (EthioGBFF) is more than an initiative; it is a beacon of hope born from a shared vision to transform the lives of young women in one of Ethiopia’s most underserved regions. Driven by compassion and the belief in the transformative power of education, we aim to empower these resilient and determined young women to overcome the odds and achieve their dreams.

The Seed of Inspiration

EthioGBFF was inspired by Mr. Amare Berhie and his wife, Weyni Tekleab, who are successful Ethiopian-Americans in the USA. Moved by the significant educational disparities young women face in remote areas, particularly the Wag Himra Zone, they realized the need for change. The lack of resources, ongoing conflicts, and overwhelming socio-economic challenges hindered these bright young minds from envisioning a future beyond their immediate circumstances.

A Call to Action

Recognizing the potential within these young women, Mr. Berhie and his family acted. They understood that education is a fundamental human right and a pathway out of poverty. Believing in the power of girls’ education to catalyze positive change, they envisioned a foundation to support these young women in overcoming barriers and pursuing higher education, thereby transforming their lives and communities.

The Foundation’s Birth

To bring this vision to life, Mr. Berhie contacted Dr. Melsew Tefera, a dedicated educator and advocate for educational equity in Ethiopia. They established the Ethiopian Girls’ Bright Future Fund with Mr. Berhie’s financial backing and Dr. Tefera’s expertise. Thanks to the invaluable support of individuals like you, this comprehensive scholarship program supports female students from impoverished backgrounds in the Wag Himra Zone.

Building EthioGBFF

EthioGBFF was built on the principles of empowerment, equality, and community. The founders ensured that every young woman receiving support would have the resources, mentorship, and encouragement needed to succeed. They established clear objectives:

  • Financial Assistance: Covering educational materials, transportation, and essential expenses to reduce financial barriers.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Providing academic support and personal development through a network of dedicated mentors.
  • Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly assessing the progress and impact of the program to ensure its effectiveness.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey was not without challenges. Reaching remote areas, overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, and addressing the vast needs required unwavering commitment. However, the program steadily progressed with support from local collaborators like the Wag Himra Zone Women and Children Department and Save the Children’s Sekota head office.

A Beacon of Hope

Since its inception, EthioGBFF has provided scholarships to numerous young women, empowering them to pursue higher education. The program’s impact is evident in the beneficiaries’ improved academic performance, increased confidence, and aspirations. Each success story testifies to the foundation’s mission and the potential of education to transform lives.

Looking Ahead

EthioGBFF envisions a future where every young woman in Ethiopia, regardless of her socio-economic background, can pursue higher education and achieve her full potential. The foundation remains committed to expanding its reach, improving its programs, and fostering a community of empowered young women who can drive positive change.
